Google's own options

Where My Maps and Quick Builder fit.

Google My Maps is free and good for a shareable map of pins, but visitors cannot search it by distance. Google's Quick Builder generates locator code you then host and maintain yourself. A hosted locator keeps the Google map and takes the maintenance off your hands.

  • My Maps: free pins, no distance search, 2,000 rows per import.
  • Quick Builder: free generated code that you host and update.
  • Handled: hosted search, filters and hours on your own Google key.

Built around the search

Google's map, a real locator around it.

A Google map with pins is not a store locator until a visitor can find the nearest location. This adds the search, the results and the details, and keeps the map on your account.

  1. 01

The map your visitors already know.

Render the locator on Google Maps with its standard look or your own Google map style, alongside your brand colours, fonts and markers.

  2. 02

Your key, Google's price, nothing added.

Map usage is billed by Google to your account. Google includes 10,000 dynamic map loads a month and then charges $7.00 per 1,000, and most small locators stay inside the free allowance.

  3. 03

Search that finds the nearest location.

Visitors search by town, postcode or address and get results sorted by distance, with categories, open-now status and a directions button.

Search and discovery

A visitor finds the nearest useful location without scanning the whole list.

The locator opens, the visitor types a town or postcode, and results reorder by distance. Search, filters, labels and layout are settings you control, not fixed behaviour.

Start with the spreadsheet you already maintain. Import a CSV, review the locations, then keep the same embed as the list changes.

Install on Custom HTML

Connect your Google key, then paste one embed.

Create a browser key in Google Cloud, restrict it to your website, add it in the Handled dashboard, then paste the embed on any page that accepts HTML.

Paste in the page body

<div id="biz-locator-root"></div>
<script src="https://cdn.handledlocal.com/widget.js"
  data-site-id="your-site-id" async></script>

Three steps to publish

  1. 1Open the HTML template or page where the locator should appear.
  2. 2Paste the complete embed code into the page body.
  3. 3Deploy the page, then open its public URL to verify it.

Claude and ChatGPT

Set it up by describing what you want.

Handled Locator runs an MCP server, so an AI assistant can operate it directly. Paste a list of addresses and they are geocoded and added, describe a design and the widget restyles, then ask for the embed code to paste here. Configuration changes are shown as a before-and-after first and only go live once you agree. Included on every plan, including the trial.

The practical questions

What changes after the trial?

Keep the design, locations and embed. Choose a plan based on location count and team seats. Your map usage remains on the Mapbox or Google account you control.

Before you choose

Questions buyers ask about this setup.

Do I need my own Google Maps API key?
Yes. You create a browser key in Google Cloud with billing enabled and restrict it to your website. Google's demo key is for prototyping only, not a live site.
What will Google charge for the map?
Google includes 10,000 dynamic map loads a month, then charges $7.00 per 1,000, getting cheaper at higher volume. Prices checked 25 September 2026. The map cost calculator itemizes geocoding and autocomplete too.
Can I switch to Mapbox later?
Yes. Both providers are supported, and you can switch without changing the embed or your location data.
Is this the same as a Google My Maps map?
No. My Maps shows pins on a shareable map. A store locator adds search by town or postcode, distance sorting, filters, hours and directions, fed from your own location list.
